3D Animation

3D Animation is an exciting and challenging course designed to inspire the creative use of graphics, illustration, motion and strategy. Using NewTek's 3D LightWave, VT(4), and Adobe Photoshop, students will create dazzling forms and animate them. LightWave is used in architecture, game development, animation, and movies such as Toy Story II and Holes. LightWave is the most complete professional toolset in the industry used by designers and artists from one-person shops to Hollywood special effects titans with hundreds of animators on staff. Animation will include animation history, drawing, structure, storyboards, scripts, character design, organic shapes, elements of a scene, surfacing, lighting, and animation. Students will produce an animated project.

Performance Objectives

Upon completion of the 3D Animation course, the student will be able to:

  • Create a Cartoon Head using Subdivision Surfaces.
  • Develop a Storyboard.
  • Build an Interior Setting.
  • Demonstrate surfacing.
  • Demonstrate creating texture images.
  • Demonstrate the use of basic lighting concepts.
  • Explore lighting for mood.
  • Explore and demonstrate the use of keyframing.
  • Explore the three principles of animation.
  • Demonstrate laying out animation projects.
  • Explore Secondary Action and develop an appreciation for visual effects.
  • Create an Atmosphere.
  • Explore camera settings.
  • Prepare objects for rendering and high quality printing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the different camera shots.
  • Develop an object and animate.
  • Develop a logo and animate.
  • Develop a character and set up for animation.
  • Develop a project from start to finish including concept, storyboard, object creation, character creation, scene creation and rendering.
Class Size: 20 Students
Class Length: 180 Hours
Prerequisites: Keyboarding (Prefer graphic and art classes as well.)
Goals: ROP Certificate, Skills Upgrading, High School Diploma, Continuing Education

Work Experience: Desirable
Credits: Variable based on 180 hours per year. Maximum of 5 per semester.
Methods: Lab, lecture, student projects done independently with supervision.
