Health Care Information Services
The Health Care Information Services program prepares students for entry-level employment in health care agencies. The objectives of this class have been to prepare students for one or more Health Care Information Services employment opportunities in a department of an acute care hospital, acute care clinic, health maintenance organization, sub-acute facility, or a large physician group practice.
The graduate has completed the Health Care Information Services core and then progressed to an occupationally specific course within the Health Care Information Services cluster. These occupations include Health Unit Management, Medical Records Management, Admitting Procedures, Health Care Financial Management, and Medical Transcription.
Performance Objectives
- Understand how health care information practices, procedures, and philosophies have evolved to current high technology and integrated delivery systems.
- Understand basic structure and function of the human body and will know medical word elements and abbreviations. This medical terminology course is articulated with Yuba College for college credit.
- Know preventive health practices and potential hazards for patients, health care workers, and co-workers within the health care setting.
- Understand principles of communication and know how these principles can be applied to conflict resolution and effective health care team communications in a culturally diverse environment.
- Understand the roles and responsibilities specific to information services occupations and will understand current ethical and legal standards including patient rights.
- Understand the necessity for key employability skills, work ethics, and professional growth and will apply these skills in preparing for, seeking, and maintaining employment and/or continuing education.
- Demonstrate knowledge of reception procedures and various types of appointment scheduling systems.
- Use copier, computers, calculators, and fax machines to process work.

| Prerequisites: |
- Be at least 16 years of age prior to clinical experience (externship)
- 10th grade proficiency in language and math on the CTEC Assessment test.
- Enrollment in remedial classes concurrent with this class if one or two grades below 10th grade proficiency. If 8th grade or less proficiency, remedial classes must be taken first before enrolling in this class to improve proficiency to required level.
- Keyboard familiarity is needed; should be able to type 20wpm.
