A+ Certification

The A+ Certification course focuses on the functioning of the personal computer (PC). The course will explore computer hardware, including ports, boards, buses, memory, disk drives, controllers, monitors and printers. The course will also explore configuration, preventative maintenance, and diagnostics. Skills required to pass the COMPTIA A+ Certification test will be integrated into all levels of coursework. The course is computer based with a large lab component included.

Performance Objectives

Upon completion of the A+ Certification course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the history of computers including system components and functions, software, and numbering systems.
  • Be versed in tools needed to perform work on computers, both software and hardware; trouble-shooting methodology and the safe operation of tools and power sources.
  • Understand system components, bus architectures, ports, connectors, cables, and expansion boards, and the accompanying component parts and operation of each item listed.
  • Understand the operation and differences between fixed disk and removable storage systems.
  • Understand how peripheral devices function and the purpose and functioning or portable computing.
  • Understand computer networking, including communications, architecture, connectivity, networking devices, troubleshooting and performing preventative maintenance.
  • Possess communication skills that ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Understand the OSI Model, A+ Core Hardware Exam Objectives, and On-Line Tutorial components.
  • Understand Windows software, Windows tools and installing and managing both Windows and non-Windows based applications, including the removal of those applications.
  • Perform installation, configuration and removal of all network components introduced in the course.
  • Implement Local Security in the Windows 2000 system, including creating and deleting accounts, modifying account properties, set workgroup and domain membership, configure file and folder security, and encryption of files and folders.
  • Know how to manage files and print resources for Windows 2000/NT/XP, Windows 9x, and managing disc resources for both systems.
  • Know how to connect to the internet and intranet resources and provide virus protection for the same.
  • Learn the methodology for preparing for disaster recovery, including methods for recovering for disasters that occur.
  • Learn to install Client Operating systems including the upgrade, troubleshooting, addition and removal of systems, performing unattended installation, and creating and installing computer images.
