Auto Body Refinishing

Upon completion of the Auto Body Refinishing course, the student will have an understanding of the basic job skills of a prep person, detailer and refinishing painter in an auto body repair shop. Classroom and lab practices will center on shop safety, vehicle surface preparation, spray gun and spray techniques, using undercoats and topcoats, sport repair and complete vehicle repairing. Job search techniques, ethics, communication skills for job retention will be reinforced.

Performance Objectives

Upon completion of the Auto Body Refinishing course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify classroom standards as they relate to standards in an auto body shop.
  • Safely use hand and power tools, solvents, and chemicals.
  • Describe the function of and operate spraying equipment and factors that affect spraying procedures.
  • Use spraying equipments and facilities including air compressors, PSI-CFM air line design, compressed air cleaners and transformers, spray booths and other equipment.
  • Prepare surfaces including determining surface condition, sand papers and abrasives, hand sanding, masking techniques, metal conditioning, chemical paint removers, and abrasive blasting.
  • Understand use of undercoats and applications including metal primers, primer surfacers, sealers, and adhesion promoter.
  • Use automotive refinishing solvents including the purpose and types of solvents. Calculate percentage of reduction and mixing ratio.
  • Understand automotive color including the history and types of color coats, color reduction, paint application procedures, paint problems, custom painting techniques.
  • Perform spot repairs characteristics of a successful sport repair and surface preparation.
  • Perform color matching including metallic color matching and off color problems.
  • Identify paint condition and remedies including blistering, bulls eyes, checking and cracking, fish eyes orange peel, lifting.
  • Use plastic exterior and interior paints.
  • Repair high abrasion coating areas including selection and preparation and spray gun selection.
  • Care for vehicle including washing, compounding, waxing, and polishing.
  • Job interview techniques, applications, resumes and interviews.
